The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is considering a new route with dedicated passenger tracks between Chicago and Porter, IN as part of a Tier I EIS for the Chicago - Detroit/Pontiac corridor.
As the gateway to any destination east of Chicago, the Reroute is one of the most important passenger rail projects in the Midwest. It is imperative that it be designed with long-term needs in mind, with a horizon of twenty or thirty years.
The Draft EIS has several routes that could meet the goal of a double-tracked, passenger-only corridor shared with trains traveling to and from the East. MDOT is working on a Final Tier I EIS, which will announce a preferred route alternative.
